HYDERABAD: In one of the biggest seizure of possession of assets disproportionate to known sources of income in the state, sleuths of the anti-corruption bureau (ACB) on Tuesday unearthed assets worth about Rs 40 crore as per current market value from a deputy executive engineer (DEE) of the irrigation department based in Hyderabad.
The ACB said Akula Suri Babu, working as DEE with Srisailam Special Designs Circle of the department based in Nampally in the city, has amassed assets whose document value was Rs 4.2 crore which will now fetch Rs 40 crore in the market. The assets include a residential house at Hyderabad worth Rs 37.95 lakh, 38 flats in three different apartments valued at Rs 2.5 crore in Hyderabad, 52.20 acres of agriculture land worth Rs 40.61 lakh, 1.2 acres of residential land at Shamshabad valued at Rs 50 lakh, investment in a paint company at Vijayawada worth about Rs 30 lakh, bank deposits totalling Rs 2.25 lakh, another set of bank accounts worth nearly Rs 5 lakh, three Maruti Versa cars, Maruti Alto and Maruti van all worth about Rs 9 lakh, gold ornaments weighing 1.3 kg worth Rs 19.5 lakh, gold ornaments found in bank locker weighing 890 gms worth Rs 13.35 lakh, silver articles weighing 2.53 kgs worth Rs 50,000, LIC premia of about Rs 2.16 lakh and other household articles worth Rs 10 lakh all amounting Rs 4,20,33,824.
The officials said the accused had stashed Rs 22 lakh worth original property documents with his auditor at Eluru which were also seized.
According to a ACB press release, simultaneous searches were conducted at different places including Akula Suri Babu’s residence in Hyderabad, the residence of his auditor in Eluru, house of his nearest relatives at Tadepalligudem and house at his native place Atlapadu village of Nidadavolu mandal in West Godavari.
Suri Babu had earlier worked as assistant engineer at Dawaleshwaram project and Srisailam project. The ACB said Babu has been arrested and that he would be produced before the special judge for ACB cases at Vijayawada.
